Everyone loves to talk about how busy they are (it’s kind of the #1 humblebrag), which can make it especially uncomfortable when you just…don’t have that much to do. Maybe your boss isn’t so great at delegating, or it’s the “slow season” for your company—but you’re you, the Type A, Get It Done kinda person, and you want to be productive with your time. Below, lean into five tasks that will keep you busy—and fulfilled:
1. Build the ultimate guide to doing your job.
Even if you know you won’t be leaving your job any time soon, this will make gold stars rain down on you the next time you’re out of the office for vacation or even a business trip. Start documenting your workflow and making guides to carrying out your regular duties, including contact information and where important files are located. Not only will this guide come in handy when you’re out of the office, but it will also be valuable when you’re ready to make the case for a raise.
2. Make a list of your biggest and best accomplishments.
Similar to No. 1 but in a more direct way, spend an hour or two making a list of all your biggest accomplishments and best bragging points. Not only is this an awesome way to boost your self-esteem, but it’ll also prepare you for when evaluations come around. We can almost taste the promotion.
3. Streamline a complicated or tedious process.
Think about the last time your boss asked you to dig up contact information for an old client—which unexpectedly took you hours. Now, think about how much easier it would be if you had a searchable database of contact info right at your fingertips. If you have the time, take the initiative to solve a common problem in your office. We promise your whole team will thank you.
4. Go on a full-on cleaning spree.
On your mark, get set, organize: Whether you choose to clean up your physical workstation or your email inbox, you’ll be left with a distraction-free environment for when the going really gets tough. Bonus points if you straighten up a communal area or Google doc.
5. Work on your professional development.
